The attack reportedly occurred in the early hours of Monday, with the assailants stealing students’ phones and other valuables. A female student was also allegedly raped during the incident and later taken to a private hospital in the Mile 6 area of Jalingo for treatment.
A student union official, who spoke anonymously, said the incident was the second attack on the students’ hostels within two weeks.
“Yesterday night, the hoodlums came in their numbers and attacked one of the female students’ hostels. They raped one of the students and also carted away phones belonging to the students and other valuables,” the official said.
The official alleged that the attackers also injured the student after the reported assault, saying she was receiving treatment at the private hospital.
According to the student union official, students had reported the first attack to the school authorities, after which the Commissioner for Tertiary Education visited the college and promised improved security at the hostels.
The official, however, said adequate security measures had yet to be put in place.
The official added that the college has seven hostels, one for male students and six for females all located outside the school premises and without adequate security.
The Provost of the institution, Dr Dorcas Dugule, acknowledged the report but declined to comment further.
“I am on top of the issue. I will not speak; please give me time,” she said.
The Taraba State Police spokesperson, Victor Mshelizah, also confirmed the attack, saying some hostels were burgled and students’ phones were stolen.
“Yes, such incident happened in the early hours of today. Some hostels were burgled and phones were stolen. But I cannot confirm the rape allegation because I haven’t seen the victim,” he said.
Mshelizah added that police officers were heading to the school to investigate the incident.
